Clapham Common
This A2-sized print depicts Clapham Common in south-west London. Today, Clapham is a busy and densely populated area of the city, with the Common remaining its central focus, just as it was in 18th-century London. In this piece, the Common appears as a rural landscape, its distinctive triangular shape standing out among surrounding fields.
Encircling the Common are a series of large manor houses, signalling Clapham’s emergence as the desirable area it would later become.
This work is one of two versions created, with the other incorporating Battersea Park further to the north.
