This painting depicts the church of St Mary le Strand, isolated on a small island. Canals branch off on either side, their still waters brimming with green algae and lily pads. Derelict, soot-covered buildings lean over the canal edges. Above, a dark sky hangs heavy with low clouds drifting across the church’s stone spire.
